Captain Alfred Spalding Russell, (7 July, 1897 – 29 August, 1945) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of J. Russell, Esq., a civil engineer.
In August 1914, Russell was plucked from the Training Establishment and appointed to the first class protected cruiser Royal Arthur. In December, he was appointed to H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth. On 18 August 1916 he was appointed to Valiant.
Russell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February, 1918 and re-appointed to Valiant, destined to remain in her until 3 January, 1920.[1]
Russell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 February, 1926.[2]
Russell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1931.[3]
Russell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1938.[4]
Beginning in 1944, Russell was starting to deal with an apparent case of Hodgkins disease. He was admitted to Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar on 3 August, 1945 with lymphadema and died on the 29th.[5]
