Vice-Admiral George Anson Primrose, R.N. (21 September, 1849 – 6 January, 1930) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Primrose was born in Edinburgh and entered the navy on 10 March, 1863.[1]

Primrose was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 23 September, 1873.[2]

On 1 June, 1881, he was invalided due to disease due to service and sent back to England, arriving there on the 14th.[3]

Primrose was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1884.[4]

He married Mary Cecilia Kenny on 30 April, 1889.[5]

Primrose was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1892.[6]

He was captain of Osborne, being superseded by Charles Windham in 1896.[Citation needed]

He was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Talbot on 22 March, 1899, to be effective upon that ship's return to the North American station from England. He paid her off on 23 November of that year.[7]

The compulsory retirement age for captains was 55. Primrose needed to be promoted by seniority to the rank of Rear-Admiral by 21 September 1904 in order to stay on the Active List. He was too far away from the top of the captains' list to make it in time, and likely would have realised it. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 10 December, 1903.[8]

Primrose was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 20 October, 1904, (showing how close he had been) and then to Vice-Admiral on 12 October, 1908. He died in 1930 at St. George's Lodge in Surrey of an intestinal obstruction.[9]
