Captain Frederic Henry Walter, R.N. (18 August, 1872 – 29 July, 1949) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Major F. E. Walter, Royal Artillery, Walter entered Britannia in January, 1886 after placing thirtieth in order of merit of the forty candidates for naval cadetship that were accepted for acceptance following a round of examinations in late November, 1885.[1]

He gained eight months' seniority on passing out of Britannia and was sent to join the Imperieuse for three years, serving on the China Station. He next served a year in Volage in the Training Squadron.

Walter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1894.

Walter was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1905.

He was appointed in command of Caribbean, on commissioning, in November 1914,[2] and commissioned the ship at Liverpool on 12 December, 1914.[3] The Admiralty approved the replacement of Caribbean with Victorian on 12 April 1915.[4] Caribbean was re-purposed to do duty as an accommodation ship in June 1915.

Walter was appointed in command of Victorian, on commissioning, on 2 June 1915, and commissioned the ship on 9 June 1915.[5]

He was granted the acting rank of Captain on 26 September, 1916.

Walter was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1918. After finishing up command stints in Teutonic and King Alfred, Walter served ashore, including some time as Duty Captain in the Operations Division. He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 12 September, 1921.
