Rear-Admiral (retired) Algernon Henry Chester Candy, C.B.E. (19 May, 1877 – 29 April, 1959) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Candy was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 76 on 15 June, 1897 for Manoeuvres.[1]
Candy was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1898.[2]
Candy lost a torpedo in April, 1909 and was cautioned to be more careful in future. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1909.[3]
Candy was appointed to the second class protected cruiser Diana on 2 January, 1911. Upon paying off Diana on 4 February, 1913, Candy was to join a Committee on Submarines. His work there was the subject of favourable mention in November 1913.[4]
On 3 April, 1915, Candy was admitted to Haslar Hospital, suffering from a concussion. He was found fit on the 26th.[5]
Candy was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1916.[6]
Candy was appointed in command of the scout cruiser Boadicea in September, 1916.
On 9 November, 1916, the Admiralty thanked Candy for his zeal and ability in producing a model of a Depth and Roll Recorder for torpedoes.[7]
Post-War
In January, 1922, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Caledon. Candy asked to be placed on the Retired List upon his relief in command of Caledon. This effective date became 15 September 1922.[8]
In 1927, Candy appealed to the Admiralty for reconsideration in his claim in a patent case regarding the installation of wireless telegraphy systems in submarines, but was informed that the Admiralty did not possess the authority to give "pecuniary recognition of the able service he rendered." Nonetheless, Candy was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 July, 1927.[9]
World War II
In 1939, Candy was appointed to the Liverpool Convoy Pool with the rank of Commodore, Second Class R.N.R..
Candy reverted to the Retired List on 22 June, 1940.[10]
Candy reverted to the Retired List on 10 August, 1943 and was mentioned in despatches "for devotion to duty during 3 years arduous service as Cdre. of Convoys", gazetted 8 September, 1943.[11]
