Admiral Ernest Gillbe Barton, Royal Navy, Retired (20 October, 1861 – 29 January, 1938) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in the Rectory at East Etchingham in Sussex, Barton was the son of Reverend R. G. Barton. He would pass out of Britannia on 21 December, 1876 and was appointed to join Monarch in the Mediterranean. He served in her until 30 October, 1881 and was next appointed to Duke of Wellington for six weeks as an acting Sub-Lieutenant.[1]

In February, 1884, it was reported that Barton had landed at Dutch House, Port Said. Captain Nicholson reported that Barton was with a landing detachment and later in command of a vessel on the Nile.[2]

Barton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1884.[3]

Captain Bedford noted that Barton did not show much interest in his work as he returned from the Nile on 1 August, 1885.[4]

Barton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1897.[5]

On 20 September 1898, Barton was castigated by the Admiralty for having failed to give orders to a Warrant Officer regarding the conveyance of eighty boys from Portland.[6]

Barton was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1904.[8]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Royal Oak on 15 July, 1905.[9]

On 1 January, 1907, Barton was temporarily appointed in command of Victorious.[10] He was appointed in command of Black Prince on 5 January, 1909.[11] He fouled a buoy at Needles with her in 1910, an accident the Admiralty thought he should have avoided.[12]

Barton left Black Prince when he was superseded on 12 January, 1911. He served briefly in command of H.M.S. New Zealand in mid 1911 and was appointed in command of the battleship Africa on 24 July, 1911.[13]

Retirement

Barton was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 15 July, 1915, vice Grant, and in accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 16 July.[14] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 3 November, 1919,[15] and to Admiral on 1 August, 1924.[16]
