Commander (retired) Maxwell Napier Williamson-Napier (2 February, 1889 – 27 June, 1950) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Maxwell William-Napier was born in Probolinggo, in Indonesia. His father was living in Arnhem, Holland when Maxwell joined the Royal Navy. Williamson-Napier gained one month's time on passing out of Britannia and being appointed to Revenge of the Channel Fleet on 15 January, 1905. He moved to Jupiter on 20 September, 1905 and served in her until 16 January, 1908. An evaluation from Captain Herbert Augustus Warren of August 1906 reported that he spoke "Dutch (slight)", but was "inclined to be lazy."[1]
Williamson-Napier was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1910.[2]
Williamson-Napier was appointed to the battleship Collingwood on 26 March, 1912. When war broke out, he was to be superseded, but plans was altered and he remained in the dreadnought until being ordered to report to the Admiralty on 22 August, 1915. On 2 September, he was appointed to command Avon. Though he had had less than one year's experience in destroyers in 1909, his wartime career was largely in command of destroyers.
Williamson-Napier was appointed in command of the destroyer Patriot on 18 July, 1917.[3]
Post-War
Williamson-Napier was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1918.[4]
In 1920, Williamson-Napier was granted permission to proceed to Holland on an additional three months' half pay, presumably to visit his father, but he was informed that he was expected to return with a definite decision as to whether he would remain in the service. Apparently, he decided against it, and Williamson-Napier was placed on the Retired List at his own request with a gratuity on 8 May, 1920.[5]
Williamson-Napier was promoted to the rank of Commander (retired) on 2 February, 1929.
World War II
In 1938, Williamson-Napier was found to be resident in South Africa, having been astray (as far as the Navy knew) since July 1936. In September 1939 Williamson-Napier was appointed to Afrikander IV as Sea Transport Officer, Grade I in Durban. Later that month, this appointment was terminated and he was placed in the Union Defence Force.[6]
