On 12 December, 1911, he was admitted to Haslar Hospital with burns. He was found fit on 4 January, 1912.[3]

In June 1916, he relieved Henry Tritton Buller in command of the second class protected cruiser Highflyer.

On 19 September 1917, Highflyer collided with a steamship. Garnett was told to be more careful in future.[7]

In January, 1918, Garnett was made Assistant Director of Mines.[8]

Garnett was awarded a C.M.G. for mining services and his services in the wake of the Halifax Disaster, gazetted 3 June, 1918.[9]
