Royal Naval College, Greenwich

History

The Royal Naval College was founded by the Order in Council of 16 January, 1873. The initial establishment was comprised of a Flag Officer as President, a Captain, Royal Navy, a Director of Studies, and Professors of Mathematics, Physical Science, Chemistry, Applied Mechanics, and of Fortification, and others as needed.

Additional recreation rooms were constructed in 1877 after a racket court had been built featuring large medallion portraits of Nelson, Howe and other naval heroes where they could clearly be seen from the river.
