Admiral Frederick Sidney Pelham, C.B.E., Royal Navy (25 October, 1854 – 19 October, 1931) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Pelham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant from the Victoria and Albert with seniority of 18 August, 1876.[1]
He married on 23 November, 1886, Miss Louise Elizabeth Chads (died 26 December, 1949).
Pelham was promoted to the rank of Commander with seniority of 31 December, 1890.[2]
Captain
On 30 June, 1898, he was promoted to the rank of Captain.[3]
Pelham was appointed in command of the second class battleship H.M.S. Conqueror on 10 July 1900 for the annual manoeuvres. It would prove an unlucky appointment for him, as on 20 July, the Admiralty found that he had not exercised proper seamanlike precaution during a time when men were injured working the hawser of Conqueror. Worse, on 8 August 1900 Pelham was found guilty at a Court Martial conducted on H.M.S. Jupiter of having negligently or by default suffering Conqueror to be stranded. He was severely reprimanded and admonished to be more careful.[4]
In September 1901, Pelham was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Fox.
In November 1904, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Hermione.
He was appointed in command of the battleship Albion on 1 August, 1905. He was superseded on 1 October, 1907.[5]
Flag Rank
Pelham was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 10 October, 1907.[6]
He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 20 March, 1913, vice Scott.[7]
Pelham was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 9 June, 1916, and placed on the Retired List the following day, in accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903.[8]
Pelham spent some time in France and Italy, beginning in late 1920.[9]
