H.M.S. Lightning was one of forty-two "A" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy — a "27 knotter".

Service

During trials in the North Sea at the end of 1895, Lightning reached 27.9 knots under forced draught—nine-tenths of a knot over the specified contract speed.[8]

In mid-1913, she was at The Nore.[9]

She was mined in the North Sea with the loss of fifteen lives, primarily engine room personnel.[10]
