Grant was appointed in command of the battleship Canopus on 1 August, 1914.[6] After the war, he recalled that he took command of the Canopus "with somewhat mixed feelings ... it was not exhilarating to find that on the almost certainty of war with Germany, one would command an almost obsolete battleship of the Battle Squadron."[7]
On 14 March, 1916, he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) dated 1 January.[8] He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 4 June vice Fyler.[9] On 19 June, 1917 he was appointed Senior Officer and in Charge of all H.M. Naval Establishments at Gibraltar, assuming command on 5 July.[10]
Post-War & Retirement
He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 25 March, 1920, vice Kennedy.[11] He was placed on the Retired List the next day.[12]
In 1923 Grant's recollections of his command of the Canopus were published in four parts in The Naval Review.
He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 8 May, 1925.[13]
