The central battery ironclad H.M.S. Alexandra was completed in 1877 for the Royal Navy. She was laid down as H.M.S. Superb, conceived as a beamier Sultan with increased armour and weaponry. She was renamed before launch, in 1874.[6]

Construction and Service

Alexandra served as flagship on the Mediterranean Station from her commissioning in January 1877 through 1889.

She paid off on 2 March, 1886.

Alexandra was re-commissioned at Devonport on 8 March 1891 to replace Northumberland.[7]
