H.M.S. Ark Royal was under construction as a tramp when acquired by the Royal Navy for conversion to a seaplane carrier, entering service at the end of 1914.

Service

Ark Royal was re-commissioned on 13 December 1923 at Chatham as part of the Reserve Fleet.[9]

She re-commissioned at Chatham on 1 April, 1928 to join the Reserve Fleet.[10]

She re-commissioned at Chatham on 6 March, 1933.[11]

On 21 December 1934, she was renamed H.M.S. Pegasus so that a new carrier could take her old name.
