Commander (retired) Henry Gray Higgins, D.S.O. (27 September, 1888 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Higgins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 June, 1909.[1]
Higgins was appointed in command of the submarine A 12 on 4 March, 1913.[2]
Higgins was appointed in command of the submarine C 23 on 30 December, 1913.[3]
Great War
Higgins was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 June, 1917.[4]
Post-War
He was appointed in command of the submarine L 1 on 17 September, 1920.[5]
Higgins was placed on the Retired List at his own request upon his discharge with the rank of Commander on 24 November, 1931.[6]
World War II
On 15 April, 1938, Higgins was reported fit for light duties only, due to tuberculous glands in his stomach. He was informed that his services were not required. In June 1941, he was hospitalised, dangerously ill with pleurisy and lung cancer. Though he was discharged on 20 September, 1941, he had new growths developing in his lungs. However, he was still working into 1944 and 1945, despite Lumbago being added to his diagnoses.
In 1949, he was granted permission to travel to France and Switzerland.[7]
