Captain John Foster Barham Carslake, (4 May, 1889 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Malabar, the son of Commander William Foster Carslake, R.N..[1]

Carslake was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1910.[2]

Carslake was awarded the second-ever Ogilvy Medal, for the year 1913, for taking first place in examinations to qualify for Lieutenant (T).

During the Great War, he served as torpedo officer in Ocean, Inflexible and Malaya.[3] Appointed to Inflexible from April, 1915, he would see action at the Battle of Jutland. He was appointed from the ship for his stint in Malaya on 29 August, 1917.[4]

Carslake would be thanked in 1917 for the ability he demonstrated in developing a Torpedo Deflection Disc for Torpedo Control. As was almost always the case in innovations so proffered, the invention was not adopted.[5]

Carslake was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1918.[6]

Carslake was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December 1922, while serving in Hood.[7][8]

Carslake was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December 1929.[9][10]

Carslake was replaced as Deputy Director of Torpedoes and Mining by fellow Ogilvy Medal winner Captain Gervase Boswell Middleton and was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 10 February, 1936.[11]
