Admiral SIR Colin Cantlie, K.B.E., C.B., D.S.C., Royal Navy, Retired (8 May, 1888 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Cantlie was born in Hongh Kong, the son of a medical doctor.
Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1909.[1] He was appointed to D 1 on 15 January, 1910, remaining in her until 15 August, 1912 when he was appointed to Arrogant for submarines.[2]
Cantlie was appointed in command of the submarine C 26 on 5 March, 1913.[3]
Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1917.[4]
He was in command of the submarine E 29 on 6 May, 1918 when she hit U 54 with a dud torpedo.[5]
Post-War
He was appointed in command of the submarine L 2 in December, 1920.[6]
Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1920.[7]
He married Agnes Isabella Howthen Calder on 18 January, 1921.[8]
Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1928. On 1 July, 1931, he was appointed Chief Staff Officer to Rear Admiral (S) Poland.[9]
Cantlie was appointed to the heavy cruiser Achilles on 1 June, 1933 to take command when she was commissioned. He would be superseded in her in August, 1935.[10]
Cantlie was appointed in command of the battleship Royal Oak on 10 August, 1938, and as Flag Captain and Chief Staff Officer to Rear Admiral Drew in the Second Battle Squadron. He would be superseded on 7 July, 1939.[11]
World War II
Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 August, 1939.[12]
Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral and placed on the Retired List on 29 October, 1942.[13]
Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 25 September, 1945.[14]
