Admiral SIR Albert Percy Addison, K.B.E., C.B., C.M.G., Royal Navy (8 November, 1875 – 13 November, 1952) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Life & Career
Addison was born in Portsmouth on 8 November, 1875.[1]
Addison was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 71 in July, 1896 for manoeuvres.[2]
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 June, 1897.[3]
He was given command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 110 on 21 July, 1903, for manoeuvres, and also command of Milford Flotilla.[4]
Addison was appointed to Mercury and for command of the Portsmouth Submarine Flotilla on 20 November, 1907.[5] Promotion to the rank of Commander followed swiftly on 31 December, 1907.[6]
Addison married Mary H. Kellett on 15 August, 1908.[7]
Addison was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1913.[8]
Great War
In February 1915, Addison was appointed in command of the light cruiser Carysfort. In September, he became Captain of the light cruiser Dartmouth.
Addison directed the Dartmouth in action against Austro-Hungarian cruiser forces on December 29, 1915.[9]
On 14 August, 1917, he was appointed in command of Maidstone, becoming Captain (S) of the Ninth Submarine Flotilla. He would retain this post through the end of the war.[10]
Post-war
In January 1920, he was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Lion, relieving Wilfred Tomkinson. On 15 April, he became Director of Torpedoes and Mining.
In 1922, he succeeded John Saumarez Dumaresq as Rear-Admiral Commanding H.M. Australian Fleet.
On 2 November, 1923 Addison was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral.[11]
Addison was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 28 February, 1929 and placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 March, though he would remain in his role as Director of Dockyards and Repair until being superseded by Vice-Admiral Cecil P. Talbot on 1 May, 1937.[12]
Addison was promoted to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 31 December, 1932.[13]
