Admiral Irvine Gordon Glennie (22 July, 1892 – 8 September, 1980) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
At the outset of the war, Glennie was appointed to the armoured cruiser Hampshire where he remained until being appointed to Broke on 6 May 1915, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1915. As 1915 wore on, he was made the ship's gunnery officer and then first and gunnery officer. He fought in her at the Battle of Jutland, and left the ship in June, 1916. In mid-July, he was appointed to H.M.S. Ithuriel as Lieutenant (G).
He commanded the patrol boat P36 from 3 October, 1917 until being appointed Lieutenant in Command of the destroyer Nepean on 19 March, 1918.[1] On 12 February 1919 he was appointed to Sirdar where he served under Lt. Cdr. Ernald Master. Before 1919 was out, he would also be in Trinidad, Tenedos (as first officer), and Spenser (also as first officer). He remained in Spenser until 4 May 1922 and then was appointed to H.M.S. Glorious.
Glennie was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1928.
Glennie was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1933.
World War II
On 3 May, 1939, he was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Hood.[2]
Glennie was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 15 January, 1941.
Glennie was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 31 December, 1943.
