Rear-Admiral THE HONOURABLE Walter George Stopford (18 September, 1855 – 1 December, 1918) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Stopford was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 8 December, 1879.
Stopford was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1892.
He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1898.
Stopford was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Leviathan on 16 June, 1903.[1]
He served as captain of Glory from February 1904 until October of the next year.
He was appointed in command of the Royal Naval Barracks, Portsmouth on 1 February, 1906.[2]
In the first week of November, there were two nights of riots among stokers at the Barracks. They were initially upset that they'd been told by Lieutenant Collard to "take a knee" before receiving a mild rebuke, and when this caused a rumpus, Stopford compounded the issue by addressing them and characterising their reaction as one of simple "stupidity."[3] Arrests were made, and tumult broke windows and furnishings, but injuries were light.
Probably not coincidentally, within a fortnight Stopford had the honour of receiving Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth Sir Archibald L. Douglas. The C-in-C employed a little bit more sugar in encouraging the assembled younger stokers to demonstrate the great loyalty Britain was confident they possessed, and to resist the influence of disillusioned older men.[4] Though Douglas had written a supportive note in Stopford's defence regarding this incident,[5] Stopford was swiftly succeeded as Commodore of the Barracks on 18 December by Arthur Archibald Campbell Galloway.[6]
Stopford retired with the rank of Rear-Admiral on 10 October, 1907.
