H.M.S. Whiting was one of forty "C" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy — a "30 knotter".
Service
In July, 1904, complaints from Vice-Admiral Noel of the China Station about the condition of his T.B.s and T.B.D.s prompted a review of his assets by First Lord of the Admiralty Selborne. Within, it was noted that Whiting was tender to Humber, her boilers had been re-tubed and her hull and machinery refitted in 1903.[8]
Whiting was placed in reserve at Hong Kong on 16 April, 1908 under the command of Lieutenant-Commander John Kiddle. He would incur the severe displeasure of the Commander-in-Chief when he grounded her later that year in Lyemun Passage.[9]
In mid-1913, she was still active on the China Station.[10]
