Admiral SIR Colin Cantlie, K.B.E., C.B., D.S.C., Royal Navy, Retired (8 May, 1888 – 9 October, 1967)[1] was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Cantlie was born in Hong Kong, the son of a medical doctor.

He was one of a good crop of new officers appointed to the battleship Magnificent on 15 September, 1904.

Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1909[2] and appointed to Mercury for instruction in submarines the same day.[3]

He was appointed to D 1 on 15 January, 1910, remaining in her until 15 August, 1912 when he was appointed to Arrogant for submarines.[4]

Cantlie was appointed in command of the submarine C 26 on 5 March, 1913.[5]

Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1917.[6]

He was in command of the submarine E 29 on 6 May, 1918 when she hit U 54 with a dud torpedo.[7]

Post-War

Cantlie was appointed in command of the submarine L 2 in December, 1920[8] and he was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1920.[9]

He married Agnes Isabella Howthen Calder on 18 January, 1921.[10]

Cantlie commanded the Third Submarine Flotilla in 1926, and finished his work by disbanding the formation and doling its submarines to the Portsmouth and Portland Flotillas, and sending its depot ship Maidstone to the Second Submarine Flotilla.[11]

Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1928. On 1 July, 1931, he was appointed Chief Staff Officer to Rear Admiral (S) Poland.[12]

Cantlie was appointed to the heavy cruiser Achilles on 1 June, 1933 to take command when she was commissioned. He would be superseded in her in August, 1935.[13]

Cantlie was appointed in command of the battleship Royal Oak on 10 August, 1938, and as Flag Captain and Chief Staff Officer to Rear Admiral Drew in the Second Battle Squadron. He would be superseded on 7 July, 1939.[14]

World War II

Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 August, 1939.[15]

Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral and placed on the Retired List on 29 October, 1942.[16]

Cantlie was promoted to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 25 September, 1945.[17]

The Times obituarist recorded Cantlie "was a distinguished submarine commander. As an admiral, he was equally successful as a dockyard administrator, being Admiral-Superintendent at Rosyth for the greater part of the Second World War, and afterwards Director-General of Shipbuilding in India."[18]
