Admiral Wilfrid Rupert Patterson, (20 November, 1893 – 15 December, 1954) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
His father was a wholesale linen merchant who was deceased by the time Patterson joined the navy with the September 1906 intake term at the Training Establishment.
Patterson served in T.B. 32 from the outbreak of war until he was appointed to the torpedo gunboat Jason as first officer on 16 January, 1915. Patterson was re-appointed to the ship upon his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 July, 1915. Superseded on 15 October 1915, he returned to England and was next appointed to the light cruiser Lowestoft on 27 October. He served in the ship for precisely one year.[1]
Patteron was appointed to the flotilla leader Faulknor for gunnery duties on 29 November, 1916. After just one month, he was appointed to Saumarez as gunnery officer.
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 July, 1923.[2]
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1928.[3]
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1933.[4]
World War II
Patterson was charged with having negligently or by default hazarded King George V in a Court Martial on 4 January, 1941. The charge was proved, and he was severely reprimanded.[5]
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 28 July, 1942.[6]
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 March, 1946.[7]
Patterson was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 3 August, 1949.[8]
Placed on the Retired List on 1 December, 1950.[9]
