Rear-Admiral Reginald Burnard Darke, C.B., D.S.O., RN. (22 August, 1885 – 1962) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Darke was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1907.[1]

He was appointed to the submarine C 13, additional, on 27 May, 1909. He left on 1 March, 1910 to take command of the submarine A 7. Successively, he was placed in command of B 1 on 8 August, 1910 and C 16 on 5 January, 1911. This string of undersea work was broken when he was appointed to King George V of the Second Battle Squadron on 14 December, 1912. This appointment would carry him well into the war.[2]

Great War

Darke left King George V on 1 July, 1915 when he was appointed in command of the submarine C 1.

Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1915, Darke was to remain in C1 until 1 January, 1916.[3]

A year and a half in command of G 2 followed, then a year in L 1.[4]

Darke was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1918.[5]

Post-War

Darke was appointed in command of the minesweeper Ross in November, 1919. He remained in her until being superseded on 15 November, 1923.[6]

Darke was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1926.[7]

Darke took Lucia from Malta with her five "L" class submarines of Second Submarine Flotilla on 26 October, 1926, the formation was expected back in Devonport on 7 November. The boats then fell under command of Rear-Admiral (S).[8] In December, 1926, Darke was appointed in command of the light cruiser Conquest.

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 June, 1937 and placed on the Retired List under the provisions of the Order in Council of 9 March, 1914 the next day.[9]
