Admiral SIR Charles Lionel Vaughan-Lee, K.B.E., C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (27 February, 1867 – 16 March, 1928) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Early Life & Career

Charles Lionel Vaughan-Lee was born on 27 February, 1867, the third son of Major Vaughan Hauning Vaughan-Lee, one time Conservative M.P. for West Somerset.

Vaughan-Lee was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 February, 1887.[1]

Vaughan-Lee was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 January, 1899.[2]

Captain

Vaughan-Lee was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1904.[3]

On 24 December 1905, he was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Astræa.[4]

He was appointed in command of H.M.S. Ganges on 5 January, 1909.[5]

Vaughan-Lee was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Warrior on 5 April, 1911.[6]

He commanded Collingwood from September 1911.[7]

He was appointed in command of the dreadnought Bellerophon on 16 August, 1912.[8]

On 1 September, 1913, he was appointed Commodore, Second Class Commanding the Royal Naval Barracks, Portsmouth.[9]

Great War

Vaughan-Lee was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to King George V on 15 September, 1914.[10] On 18 December he was appointed Captain of the battleship Thunderer.

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 12 August, 1915, vice Erskine,[11] and superseded in command of Thunderer on 24 August.

He was appointed Director of Air Services at the Admiralty on 8 September.

On 1 January, 1917, Vaughan-Lee was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.),[12] and on 19 January he was appointed Admiral Superintendent of Portsmouth Royal Dockyard.[13]

Post-War

In recognition of his war services, on the occasion of the King's birthday Vaughan-Lee was appointed a Knight Commander in the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) on 3 June, 1919.[14]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 26 January, 1920, vice Ricardo, and placed on the Retired List the following day.[15] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 10 March, 1925.[16]
