Captain Harry Jones, Royal Navy (27 December, 1864 – 5 April, 1914) was an officer in the Royal Navy who died very shortly before the Great War.

There was a different man, Harry Janes, who served in the R.N.R. during the Great War.

Life & Career

Jones was promoted to Lieutenant with a seniority date in July, 1884 and received the Beaufort Testimonial for 1885.[1]

On 4 July, 1888, Jones was loaned to command the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 58 for manoeuvres.[2]

Jones was promoted to Commander in 1897.[3]

Jones was promoted to Captain on 31 December 1904.[4]

In May 1907, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Furious. He remained with Furious until February 1909, when he became Captain of Suffolk for a two year posting.

Jones served as captain of Implacable from November 1911 for about a year, and then to Africa for a stint of equal length.

Jones was sent to Chatham Hospital on 3 April 1914, diagnosed with nephritis. Though telegrams dated as late as 8 April indicate that he was transferred to Haslar at his own request, he seemingly died on 5 April, 1914.
