Admiral SIR Michael Maynard Denny, G.C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O. (3 October, 1896 – 7 April, 1972) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Reverend Edward Denny passed out of the Training Establishment on 15 May, 1914 and was appointed to the battleship Neptune of the First Battle Squadron. He served in her until he was appointed to the new super-dreadnought Royal Sovereign on 18 April, 1916. She was not ready for action by the time of the Battle of Jutland, but he continued to serve in her until he was sent to H.M.S. Excellent to qualify in gunnery on 17 February, 1919, having been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1917.[1]

Denny was awarded 1920's Commander Egerton Prize for passing the best examination in practical Gunnery when qualifying for Gunnery Lieutenant. He served in various experimental and educational shore appointments, including command of the trawler Excellent, until being appointed to Emperor of India as Lieutenant (G) on 15 October, 1922.[2]

Denny served in Emperor of India until she paid off on 11 May, 1925 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1925.[3]

He served as gunnery officer in Nelson from 12 December 1928 until 16 April, 1930.

Denny was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1930.[4]

Denny was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1936.[5]

World War II

Denny was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 5 July, 1945.[6]

Denny was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 22 October, 1948.[7]

Denny was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 22 April, 1952.[8]

Retired 28 July, 1959.
