Admiral SIR Ernest Russell Archer, K.C.B., C.B.E., Royal Navy, Retired (14 September, 1891 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Archer was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on 15 April, 1902.[1]
Archer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1914.[2]
Great War
Archer was appointed in command of the P38 in May, 1917, remaining in her until the end of February, 1918.
Archer was appointed in command of the destroyer Fury on 8 March, 1918.[3]
Archer was appointed to Fury as first officer on 14 January, 1915. On 3 July, he was transferred to Mons to await her commissioning. He was forced to leave her on 16 September to go to a hospital ship for surgery due to variocele. From there, two weeks in Chatham Hospital, but he was not discharged until 6 October. He was then appointed to Larne on the 15th, remaining in her until 3 January, 1916 when he was appointed to Nereide. By 23 April, 1916, he was informed that he had insufficient sea time to qualify him for destroyer command, and on 25 September he was appointed to Rowena.[4]
Inter-War Period
Archer was appointed in command of the destroyer Thruster on 29 July, 1920.[5]
Archer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1922.[6]
After a series of destroyer commands, he was appointed commander of Capetown on 2 February, 1925, where he would remain for two years.[7]
Archer was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1927.[8]
Archer was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1934.[9]
He was appointed in command of the battleship Revenge in July, 1939.
World War II
Archer was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 8 July, 1943.[10]
Archer was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 16 May, 1947.[11]
Archer was promoted to the rank of Admiral and placed on the Retired List on 1 December, 1950.[12]
