Vice-Admiral James Lacon Hammet, C.V.O., Royal Navy (15 May, 1848 – 15 February, 1905) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Hammet was confirmed in the rank of Lieutenant dated 29 July, 1869 on passing college in December, 1870.

He was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal for rescues from drowning for an act of bravery on 26 February 1874.[1]

Hammet was promoted to the rank of Commander on 23 June, 1880.[2]

In 1885 he was awarded a bar to his Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal for another act of bravery performed on 13 April 1885.[3] [4]

Hammet was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 January, 1886, at the relatively young age of thirty-seven.[5] On 15 December, 1890, he was appointed in command of the troop ship Tamar.[6]

On 1 January, 1900, Hammet was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral.[7] He served as one of the three umpires for the 1901 naval manœuvres.[8]

On the occasion of the King's visit to Malta Hammet was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) on 21 April, 1903.[9]

Hammet was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 January, 1905.[10]

His successor at Malta was appointed on 16 January, 1905. Hammet started for home, but was not to make it; he died at the Grand Hotel in Florence on 15 February, following two days' illness.
